the number one way to increase your effectiveness (damage) in a group is a good shot rotation, regaardless of your spec or equipment.
try to weave you steady shot, arcane shot, and multi shot into your autoshots, allowing your white damage to get in with your shots. this will at least double your damage done and make you worth your weight in gold to a group. Aimed shot should only be used at the beginning of a pull because it resets your auto shot.
I use this: aimed, multi, sting, auto, arcane, auto, steady, auto, steady......
It works incrediably well. for cc'ed mobs, omit multi shot, for obvious reasons.
Also, remember to feign often as possible during boss fights to dump that aggro- this shot rotation generates a fuckton of aggro- a lot of warriors that I have pugged with have trouble keeping aggro off me (mostly cause they suck shitballs).
Happy Hunting!

pvp shot rotation- (spec varies) Beast- I find the most effective shot rotation for a BM hunter is to burn Bestrial wrath, Rapid fire, Intimidate, and any trinket they may be able to activate to increase their ap/haste/crit/etc. This can produce around 900+ dps on a stunned target for roughly 15 sec. Use arcane and multi-shot inbetween auto-shots. Very few, if any, can survive this attack without focused healing. Also, kiting melee classes around while your pet beats on them is an effective survival tactic. MM- Using your rapid fire and using Multi-shot and arcane shot inbetween auto shots. try to avoid casting shots like steady and aimed if you can when you're being attacked. Silience shot is a casters worst nightmare and can give a healer a bad day. 3 secs of no heals on a cloth wearer can be the end if any shots crit. SURV- Crit is your friend here. Try to hit someone with a wyvern sting to start. then laydown the beats on some noob. Burn all your cooldowns at once to get max dps/survival and then use readiness to get them all back. I suggest blowing rapid fire again quickly and using deterence when you're under attack. Again- wyvern shot another if possible to keep the cc going. I suggest only using frost trap to slow down those melee classes and feigning is still a trick most fall for. Remember to time your auto and arcane/steady/multi shots well so that your not slowing down your attack speed. I suugest using the hunter timer add-on to help this. Concussive shot is also handy and if you have improved Concussive, I recommend weaving that into your shot rotation as well. A smart hunter can kill a more-powerful (geared) player if they use all they can to their advantage.
