Headline from CNN today: Miss Deaf Texas struck by train, killed I know its evil, and I shouldn't laugh, but I freaking lost it when I saw this, oh my god. Seriuosly, she's deaf, what is she doing on the train tracks?? This sounds like something from a bad sticom. I just couldn't stop myself. Oh, and the article reports they were blowing the train's horn right up until the accident occured

Alright, now you made me feel bad Rotten. I wasn't thinking of the person, but the story. Yes, it is sad that she was so young and probably had a very bright future and a caring family.
Damn you.

Never lament the outcome, when the stark fist of evolution smites a cripple. Through deaths such as these our species becomes stronger.
Mourn for the individual if necessary. But rejoice for the species...

I can't really agree with that too much Namtar, lol. If I did, then I'd have to concede that it would be a good thing if I walked into oncoming traffic, being blind as a freaking bat as I am.
Of course, that would be good for humanity, but I refuse to say it. Shit, I just did. . what do I do!! what do I do!!

that natural law can not exsist for humans for we are a weak race that will die out in maybe less than another million years making our entire exsistance insignifagant and a waste of resources therfore her dieing is sad.
also i think ur the improvement of the human race guirck albinos look damn cool and considering how much our society bases of off looks ur the superior species as far as im concerned.

Well, this turned into a fairly serious discussion...
At any rate, I'm inclined to believe that humanity's tendance to coddle it's weak and less able has more of less halted (or maybe even "reversed") our evolution.
More on this later if anyone cares enough.

I hear that Vith. In fact, I seldom think deeply about anything other than the problems we face with respect to evolution and technology.
I was a bit overaggressive with my initial response and painted the picture with an overly broad brush. The problem with this individual was not so much her deafness, but her decision to hang out on the train tracks.
As for evolution being reversed, this can be easily confirmed by visiting any Wal-Mart location in the southwestern US, preferably on a late afternoon. It is the preferred location for trash of all colors to buy imported plastic crap, and by the quantities of barely sentient children running wild through the aisles like crack-addled chimpanzees, it seems they're breeding rapidly.
But at any rate, the issue of evolution isn't very clear cut when it comes to social creatures, particularly humans. Outside of Darwin Awards recipients, it isn't always clear how the traits of an individual may help or hinder their society.
I would be happy to continue to discuss this at great length with anyone so inclined. Be advised that I'm as far from political correctness as can be imagined.
Despite the fact that we'll likely exterminate ourselves with a biotech/nanite plague of some sort in the coming decades, there's a part of me that never gives up hoping to make things better for the people I care about.

Damn. Had to mention nanites, didn't you. I figure if there is anything that is going to kill us all, nanotechnology is going to be it. One self replicating robot the size of a molecule and it's over. The biggest problem, as far as I see it, is a combination of three factors: - Intelligence is indesputably influenced by genetics.
- People of like intelligence tend to pair with each other.
- More intelligent people tend to have less children.
Yes, there are counterexamples for all three points, but those are the more common outcomes. The bottom line is that stupid people are breeding faster. The only things that can be done to counter this would be either to invoke mandatory birth control (which for god knows what reason is viewed as unethical), or just start having lots of kids ourselves (keep up the good work, Majin!) Factor into this the fact that physical and mental disabilities are no longer selected against (such as McGuirk's or my own eyesight, or mine and aph's variations of IBD) and the outlook is somewhat grim.

Erm..........this is the begining of an article i found..... -------------------------------------------------- Bad Seed The Fledgling Psychopath
In 1979, sixteen-year-old Brenda Spencer received a rifle for her birthday. She used it to shoot kids at an elementary school near her San Diego home, wounding nine and killing two. A reporter asked her later why she had done it. Her answer: "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yea.........so i started cracking up when i read it........
