I wrote this hoping to improve the battle-knowledge of all guild members. I hope that all mentors of lower-level players will pass such information on...

I don't know how many of you are 100% clear on the following terms, but if you don't, please continue reading:
1) Tanking
2) Main Heal(er)
3) Secondary Healer
4) Main Assist
5) Off-Tank
6) Pulling
7) Aggro / Aggroing
8) Aggro radius
9) Add
10) AoE
11) The "Peeler"
... I'll add more to this list as people think of more things (everyone feel free to help me build this thread)
The Definitions:
1) Tanking (or the Main Tank (MT))
-------------------------------------------
This is a quote taken off the forums that I highly agree with:
"...if your job is to tank then your priority is to get hit not to kill.
That's right, you don't kill stuff - you switch around and hit everything throwing up those AOE slam attacks and taunts, and whatever else you can do to make sure everything is hitting you. You do not, [repeat] NOT kill anything. That's what other people in the group do. You are the distraction.
[If you] Don't like this, then stop tanking and let your group know that you don't tank. That way they can stop wiping when they think your doing the one thing you don't do." - Drom, Level 60 Rogue
Zrog says: The tank's FIRST priority is to keep the healer from taking damage, esp melee damage!
2) Main Healer (MH)
------------------
Contrary to some beliefs, the main healer's job is NOT to heal everyone, but to heal the tank. If the tank is doing his job and holding all the aggro, then he will be the one who needs most of the healing.
3) Secondary Healer
--------------------------
As with all secondary positions, secondary healer takes his cues from the main healer. If the tank loses some aggro and others are taking damage (including the MH), it's the secondary's job to take up the slack. However, know that you are supporting them, not working independently as a fully autonomous second position!
4) Main Assist (MA)
-----------------
Many people have no idea what this is, but it's an invaluable tool to get mobs to die faster. Simply put, the main assist is the one person (NOT THE TANK!) that every else /assists (the F key) such that whichever target the MA is attacking is the one that dies first (also known as the tactic "focus firing"). If the MA changes targets mid-battle, he MUST let all others know.
5) Off-tank
--------------
Similar to the secondary healer, the off-tank takes up the slack when the MT cannot hold all the aggro. This often happens when your tank is lower level than high-damage dealer classes (mages, hunters, rogues).
6) Pulling
-----------
Defined as "bringing target(s) to a more favourable location for battle" (almost always towards the party). The MT or MA will usually pull with a ranged weapon.
7) Aggro
-----------
The amount of "hate" a mob has towards a specific party member (you). If it hates you more than anyone else, it will attack you.
8) Aggro radius / ranges
-------------------------------
The range at which a mob will notice and attack a player. Varies by level of player vs mob. Lower level party members have higher aggro ranges.
9) Add
--------
"ADDitional" enemy joins the fight when a battle is already underway. "2 adds" means 2 additional mobs have engaged the party.
10) AoE
----------
Area of Effect. Generally refers to the use of an ability that hits more than one target within a given radius.
11) The Peeler
--------------------
There's a seldom-used job that's given known as the peeler, they pick up those mobs that break from the MT. If a monster breaks for your healers or runs away or what not, the peeler picks them up and makes sure they don't get your healer or run, or whatever. Hunters and Shammies are good for this purpose.
